Iceland tops list of best expat destinations

A new report has found that Iceland tops the list of best destinations to move to this year.

The 2019 Global Expat Index, carried out by Globehunters, ranked the 34 OECD countries on a range of factors including careers, cost of living, quality of life and lifestyle.

Iceland came first in the categories of safety and migrant acceptance, while it also has the second highest life expectancy, behind Japan, and the second highest average income, behind Switzerland. The country also achieved top five finishes in the happiness (fourth) and childcare cost (fifth) categories.

All this helped Iceland finish with an overall score of 71.61, placing it ahead of second-placed Austria which scored 69.48.

Although Austria didn’t top any of the individual category rankings, it was a consistent scorer, finishing in the top ten of seven out of the 11 categories. Its best performance was in the safety index where it placed third behind only Iceland and New Zealand.

Canada placed third overall, being recognised as one of the safest and most immigrant accepting nations in the OECD, while New Zealand was fourth.
