Australia introduces two new immigration occupation lists

The Australian government has replaced the country’s two main occupation lists for immigration purposes.

Last week, the government announced that the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and Consolidated Sponsored Occupations list has been replaced by the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MTSSL) and the Combined List of Eligible Skilled Occupations respectively.

The MTSSL has been reduced to 435 occupations, down from the 651 that had been used for the SOL. Actors, Authors, pilots, biochemists, firefighters, flying instructors and conveyancers are among the 216 occupations which have been cut from the lift.

Applicants applying for any General Skilled Migration visa, along with Temporary graduate visa applicants will need to nominate an occupation from the MTSSL in order to be eligible for immigration. They must have requisite work experience and qualification in the nominated occupation.

These lists will contain occupations that have been assessed as being of high value to the Australian economy and aligning to the Government’s longer term training and workforce strategies.
