Visas & Advice Detail

Partner Category (Family Class)

This visa category under Family Class is worth looking at, especially if you have an Australian partner

Key requirements
You must be either the spouse, prospective spouse (fiance(é)), or in an interdependent or de facto relationship with an Australian resident, or citizen over the age of 18.
The applicant must be of good health and character.

Processing time
Partners of Australian citizens currently receive priority processing. Statistically, the Australian High Commission in London currently takes from three to 10 weeks to grant Spouse (Provisional) and Interdependency (Provisional) visas and from four to 12 weeks to grant Prospective Marriage visas. The spouse/de facto and interdependent visas are both two-stage processes. Initially the applicant will be assessed for a permanent visa which is valid for two years. A permanent visa will then be issued if the relationship is assessed as still being genuine and ongoing at the end of the two years. Those who apply under the prospective marriage category will be granted a visa valid for nine months, during which time the applicant must enter australia and marry their partner. They will then need to apply for a spouse visa

Alternatives
Australia also offers family visas for parents of Australian - the parent visa and the contributory parent category – children, aged dependent relatives, remaining relatives and carers.
