Nelson is number one with Brits
Nelson has the highest proportion of British immigrants than any other area of New Zealand, according to new census figures
The figures, released this week by Statistics New Zealand, showed that 3,774 people in the Nelson region were British or Irish born – an increase of 528 since 2001. The number of Brits in Tasman has also risen by 35 per cent over the last five years.
According to Claire Nichols, Multi Ethnic Council co-ordinator, migrants have been attracted to the Nelson area by the prospect of sunshine and a great lifestyle. She said that people often found it easier to get jobs in bigger centres but still chose to live in Nelson, with many people having travelled around New Zealand on holiday before deciding to settle there.
The area was third only to Auckland and Wellington in terms of the proportion of residents born overseas. According to the census figures, 18.6 per cent of Nelson's population were not native Kiwis, compared to 15.6 per cent in 2001. Nichols said that it was the first time the region had beaten Canterbury in the multiculturalism stakes.
