Immigrants more skilled than emigrants

The Department of Labour says people coming to New Zealand to live appear to be more highly skilled than those leaving the country

Around 30,000 Kiwis were lured by Australia's burgeoning economy and higher wages in the year ending June, but New Zealand Finance Minister Michael Cullen insisted that far from being a 'brain drain' on the country's skilled workers, the movement of workers to Australia was more of a "brawn drain".

The Department of Labour also stated that New Zealanders departing to the rest of the world were more skilled than people departing to Australia, and a spokesperson said last month, "Our immigrants appear to be more skilled than our emigrants."

The net inflow to New Zealand is also expected to rise to about 12,000 by March 2007, according to the Department of Labour, up from the net inflow of 10, 628 between June 2005 to June 2006
