Migration Trends Report released

The New Zealand Department of Labour has issued its sixth annual 'Migration Trends Report', reports Hanna Lindon

The 2005/2006 report shows that 52,000 people were granted residency in New Zealand during this period, with 60 per cent of that number obtaining a visa under the Skilled Migrant or Business categories.

Among the key findings of the Migration Trends Report was that temporary migration has increased substantially over the last five years. In the 2005/2006 year, over 1.5 million people entered New Zealand on a temporary permit. The majority of this number were visitors, with students and workers also making up a significant minority.

The report also revealed the UK as the largest source country overall for the New Zealand residence programme. Including applicants under the Family and Humanitarian categories, the UK accounted for 29 per cent of all residence approvals.

Finally, the report found that, of the 51,236 people approved for residence in the year 2005/2006, over half were approved under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC). Of these, 75 per cent had a skilled New Zealand job offer, while 31 per cent had a qualification in an area of absolute skills shortage.

The UK remained the largest source of SMC approvals in 2005/2006: 41 per cent of approved applications were submitted by Brits – an increase of 10 per cent over the 2004/2005 figures.
