Earthquake hits Wellington
Sleeping Wellingtonians were awoken from their sleep by a magnitude five earthquake
There were no reported injuries from the quake, which has been termed 'moderate' by experts.
The quake was centred 40 kilometres northwest of the capital and 60 kilometres below the earth's surface, GNS Science, the national geological agency, said in a statement. The earthquake follows the false alarm on May 4th of a potential tsunami hitting the Kiwi coast after an earthquake in nearby Tongo.
There were accusations from coast-dwelling New Zealanders that the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management did not do enough to warn of any impending danger.
While New Zealand is said to experience around 14,000 earthquakes a year, although only about 150 are felt by Kiwis.
