Signing to be made official
Sign Language is to be declared an official language of New Zealand
The purpose of the Bill is to promote and maintain the use of New Zealand Sign Language, and will allow for the use of New Zealand Sign Language in legal proceedings.
The bill sets out principles to guide government departments in the use of New Zealand Sign Language. NZ Sign Language is distinct from sign languages used in other countries, though it is closely related to AusLan (Australian Sign Language) and is descended from British Sign Language.
