Road tolls could hit Auckland
A study looking at different options for charging Auckland motorists to drive through the city was released by the government recently
The Ministry of Transport report looks at five potential road and parking levies to tackle Auckland's traffic congestion problems. The government are yet to take a position on the study.
Amongst the potential schemes was an 'area charge' which would charge motorists NZ$5 a day to enter the Auckland central business district. Another possible schemes in the report suggested a 'parking levy' that would involve a $10 a day additional charge on parking on both private and public property.
Across all schemes, motorists would only be charged Monday to Friday, between 6am and 10am, and residents would be exempt from the parking levy scheme.
Auckland's congestion troubles are blamed on regional growth and a high reliance on cars. The number of Auckland car owners is comparable to the USA, Australia and Canada.
