Oz cities are liveable locations

Australian cities are among the most liveable in the world, if the results from a recent survey are to be believed.

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) 2009 Liveability survey - which ranked 140 cities worldwide on criteria including stability, health care, education, infrastructure and culture and environment - five Australian cities were ranked in the top 20, with three in the top ten.

Melbourne was the highest placed Oz city in the survey, in third place behind Vancouver, Canada and Vienna, Austria. Perth was ranked equal fifth, alongside Calgary, Canada, with Sydney in join ninth with Zurich in Switzerland.

Outside of the top ten Adelaide was 11 and Brisbane 16th on the list "Australian cities represent many of the best aspects of liveability, while instability in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh means that cities in South Asia fare much worse," EIU spokesman Jon Copestake said.

The EIU data follows on the heels of the 2009 Mercer Quality of Living Survey which was released earlier this year. In this survey Sydney was the highest ranked Australian city (in 10th), followed by Melbourne (18th) and Perth (21st).
