Changes to the Immediate Skills Shortage List (ISSL)
The biannual review of New Zealand’s Immediate Skills Shortage List (ISSL) which identifies the professions most in demand in the country has seen the removal of 44 professions.
Occupations no longer on the list with effect from 15 June 2009 include baker, carpenter, dental assistant and car mechanic.
According to Head of Immigration Andrew Annakin, these changes reflect the degree of change New Zealand's economy has undergone over the past few months. "Occupations which were identified as readily trainable and those for which New Zealanders may be available were reviewed for removal," he says. "In this time of economic uncertainty, these types of occupations were prioritised for review to ensure opportunities for New Zealanders. That said, there will be ongoing review of all occupations on the list.
Annakin added that the removal of the occupations from the list is the result of extensive consultation with industry groups, other stakeholders and relevant government agencies. "The changes to the list indicate that the Department's policy is flexible and responsive to the changing face of the country's labour market and the economic volatility the country is current experiencing."
However, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) was keen to emphasise that there are still opportunities for migrants in certain areas. "New Zealand still has skill shortages and jobs may need to be filled by people from overseas," concluded Annakin.
