America: The British love affair continues
The States remain as popular as ever with Brits emigrating overseas, according to recently released figures from the US Department of Homeland Security.
The statistics showed which parts of the world America's new legal permanent residents (LPRs) in 2008 hailed from. Of the 1,107,126 new LPRs in 2008, 14,348 (or 1.3 per cent of the total number) came from the United Kingdom, which was roughly the same number as the previous year (14,545, or 1.4 per cent).
The nationalities that accounted for the largest number of LPRs in 2008 were Mexico (189,989, or 17.2 per cent), the People's Republic of China (80,271, or 7.3 per cent) and India (63,352, or 5.7 per cent). The other top ten countries contributing the most new LPRs during 2008 were the Philippines, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Colombia, Korea and Haiti. The UK contributed the 17th highest number of LPRs to the US during 2008, the highest number of any European nation.
The figures do not show how many non-immigrant visa holders moved to the States last year, but they do indicate a continuing love affair between Brits and the US.
