NZ employment slips slightly

The latest UK employment statistics released today present Brits with another reason to emigrate to New Zealand. According to the Labour Market Statistics report, there has been a fall in both the number of people in employment and the employment rate.

The unemployment rate was 6 per cent, up 0.4 percentage points from the previous quarter, and the number of people in employment decreased by 115,000 over the quarter.

In contrast, the most recent analysis of the labour market released by Statistics New Zealand put the unemployment rate at 4.2 per cent, with only 94,000 unemployed. This represents a quarterly unemployment increase of 0.3 per cent.

The UK report highlights increasing economic woes which are prompting many to seek a better life overseas. Although New Zealand has not escaped the effects of the present global credit crisis, it has been hit less hard than many European and North American nations. The newly elected National Party's concentration on the economy is also expected to keep the country on an even economic keel.
