Migration programme to increase

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has announced that the size of the migration programme will increase by 8,800 places for the 2007–08 year

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has announced that the size of the migration programme will increase by 8,800 places for the 2007–08 year , taking the total number of allocated spaces in the programme to 152,800.

Once again the skilled migration programme will bear the brunt of this increase with an extra 5,000 migrants being targeted through the skilled stream. This means 67 per cent (102,500) of all Australia's targeted immigrants in 2007–08 will be skilled workers. The Australian government is also targeting an increase in the number of Parent visas allocated in this 12-month period.

Results of a report conducted by the Australian National Audit Office released in May also revealed that the DIAC needs to improve its health screening of visa applicants.

The report's main concern is with the number of temporary residents entering the country who could pose a tuberculosis threat to Australia.
