Construction workers in demand in Oz

Construction workers are expected to be much in demand in Australia over the coming months, especially in the country’s eastern states.

According to recruitment experts, Hays, robust building conditions in the new home, apartment and commercial markets in several states are creating plenty of jobs for construction professionals and tradespeople.

“Australia’s economy is undergoing structural change as it successfully transitions from mining to the services sectors,” says Ronan Mulry, Business Director of Hays Construction. “During this period the construction sector is driving good levels of job growth for professional construction and design staff as well as tradespeople.”

Construction workers interested in putting their skills to good use Down Under are best advised to check out the eastern states as an unprecedented residential housing boom creates huge demand for skilled candidates.

“New South Wales and Sydney in particular are busy thanks to the new build commercial and residential markets,” says Ronan. “In Queensland the focus is on Brisbane where there is a steady flow of roles in the commercial sector while demand for residential housing will keep the market busy.”

Ronan continues: “In the ACT local developers and international investors are contributing to growing confidence, with high rise residential and mixed use commercial projects the focus. Finally, while not booming, South Australia has seen greater positivity in recent months thanks to a busy residential construction market and a steady flow of large commercial and infrastructure projects.

“All this is creating job opportunities for those lucky enough to have the construction expertise in demand.”

According to the latest Hays Quarterly Report, for July to September, construction workers among the most in-demand at present include degree qualified Contracts Administrators, Project Managers with experience delivering multi-storey residential projects and Site Managers with experience delivering high-rise residential projects. Commercial and residential Estimators, Forepersons, Project Engineers and Civil Designers are also needed.

In design, Design Architects and Project Architects with BIM/Revit skills who are sought, particularly in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are all required. Town Planners, Senior Architects, Revit Drafters and Interior Designers with Revit and design abilities are in demand too.

In the trades and labour market experienced concrete trades such as Form Work Carpenters, Concreters and Concrete Patchers with high rise building experience are needed. Experienced Carpenters, Steel Fixers, Plumbers, Electricians and Painter Decorators are also sought, as are experienced and motivated CW1 Labourers.
