New resource to encourage citizenship

Canada's immigration minister recently launched a new online service to help the study of Canadian civics, history and citizenship.

Immigration Minister Kenney unveiled the new interactive resource section of the official Canadian immigration website saying it will be useful for all Canadians, including students and teachers.

The first section of the new web-based initiative is named 'A Fun Path to Learning' and is based on the new citizenship study guide 'Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship'.

The hope is that through taking part in the fun online activities people will learn about Canada's history and political institutions. Modules planned for the future include ones to help people learn about the monarchy and immigration.

"When I launched Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship, I said that it wasn't just for newcomers – but, indeed, all Canadians," Minister Kenney commented. "This web tool helps promote a solid understanding of Canada's history, values, symbols and political institutions, and an appreciation of how ethnic and cultural communities have helped shape Canada's national identity. "I encourage students and teachers to explore this new learning resource."

According to Canadian Immigration 'A Fun Path to Learning' provides "interesting, challenging and fun learning opportunities for elementary, junior and high school students, their teachers, and even their parents."

Minister Kenney added: "A shared understanding of Canda and Canadian history unites us all as citizens."

'A Fun Path to Learning' will be of particular use for young migrants in the process of integration into Canadian life. By gaining a better understanding of their new homeland's history and culture they will feel an affinity with their surroundings and their peers far quicker than they would otherwise.
