Regional skills signposts
Following on from his skilled visa signposts flow chart in Emigrate magazine, David Fuller continues his journey into the Australian states and territories
Being sponsored by a state or territory government for an Australian-skilled sponsored visa not only affords expedited visa processing at the moment, but it also means you will need to only score 100, instead of 120 points to qualify for a visa.
In order to stand a chance of emigrating via this route you will still have to meet the basic requirements of the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Programme. You would then have to be nominated by a state or territory government. In order to be nominated you will probably need to have a skill included on that particular government's skills shortage list (see links below), although each authority can also sponsor up to 500 applicants who do not have an occupation included on its list. In the latter instance, your selection will be dependent of the discretion of that particular state or territory.
Anyone who is sponsored by a state or territory or government is expected to stay in that particular area for up to two years.
There is also a temporary, regional version of this visa, through which you must have lived in a regional area of Australia for two years and been employed for one, in order to obtain permanent status. The lists for this visa do differ slightly from those below, so be sure to check those out as well.
