E-2 reform hope

A bill to give E-2 visa holders the opportunity to earn permanent residency has been re-submitted to Congress.

The original bill (from former senator Heather Wilson) has been re-presented to Congress by Congressman Adam Putnam (a Republican from Florida). The bill number is HR1162 and so far it has one co-sponsor, Congresswoman Sue Myrick (a Republican from North Carolina).

There are hopes that another three co-sponsors - from Florida, New Mexico and Maine respectively - will also soon sign their support to the bill.

Clearly, more Members of Congress will need to pledge their support to bill HR1162 if it is to pass through the House. However, campaigners are hopeful, and even believe there is a chance of a getting similar bill presented to the Senate.

A website leading the charge to see the Heather Wilson Bill made into law is E2reform.org, where details of other immigration bills also in the pipeline are listed.

An article giving advice on making the best impression with an E-2 application will feature in the June issue of Emigrate magazine.
