Victoria welcomes business migrants
Having looked at business migration in WA, NSW and Tasmania, this time we asked the Victorian government what they’re looking for when it comes to business migrants
The United Kingdom is one of the top five source countries for business and skilled migrants to Victoria. Business migrants from the UK engage across a broad spectrum of Victoria's industry sectors including health, hospitality, business services, manufacturing and dairy farming.
Business migrants usually enter Oz on a temporary four-year visa. After establishing and operating a successful business for at least two years they can apply for permanent residency provided they meet federal government criteria.
In 2004–05 over 1,000 business migrants from across the world arrived in Victoria. The majority of these business migrants operate service businesses that require a high level of skill including business consultancies and advertising agencies. Victoria welcomes migrants wishing to establish a business or invest in Australia's most progressive state. Victoria's desirable living and commercial environment continues to attract thousands of migrants from around the world each year.
In order to obtain Victorian sponsorship, the potential business migrant must present a business proposal that demonstrates the feasibility of the commercial undertaking here in Victoria and details the economic contribution it will deliver to the state. The proposed business is assessed against its potential to do one or more of the following:
Develop business links with international markets;
Create or maintain employment in Victoria;
Export Australian/Victorian goods or services;
Produce goods or services that would otherwise be imported;
Introduce new or improved technology; or
Add to commercial activity and competitiveness within sectors of the Victorian economy.
The Victorian Government assists business migrants with the development of local business strategies by linking them with State and Federal and Local Government departments and agencies, industry associations and private sector organisations and institutions.
