Careers in the chemical sector
Chemical engineers, research scientists and a host of other specialists are being sought by the NT government in a drive to make the region the centre of the chemical industry in Australia
At the beginning of February the government in Northern Territory welcomed Darwin Clean Fuel company's proposal to construct a AUS$450 million (£191 million) condensate processing facility in the East Arm area.
The technological plant specialising in the cleaner burning liquefied natural gas (LNG), will boost the region's already buoyant economy and create more jobs while Australia faces a slowing in the job market in other states. Syd Stirling, acting chief minister in the Territory, said the company's announcement is the result of two years' worth of negotiations. "This announcement by Darwin Clean Fuels is another sign of confidence in the Territory's economy," he said. "It will see 250 jobs created during the 30 months of construction and 60 jobs once operational."
Stirling agreed the project was consistent with Government's plans to broaden the Territory's economic base and create more jobs and business opportunities for residents in the region. "The project involves turning condensate from the Timor Sea and North West Shelf gas fields into quality transport fuel; it would form part of a clean fuel industry cluster in the East Arm Development Area with one project already completed and another underway." The condensate facility is another example of the growing number of industries that can now base themselves in the Territory as a result of oil and gas development in the Timor Sea. The project will now be subject to design, engineering and feasibility studies and the proponent will be seeking environmental and planning approvals.
