Canadian settlement funds

David Fuller looks at the level of 'settlement funds' required by families heading to Canada

With employment harder to come by all over the world at present, and the prospect that new arrivals to Canada may not find a job immediately, the subject of 'settlement funds' takes on greater importance.

All skilled workers and professionals must prove that they have enough money to support themselves and their dependants after they arrive in Canada. This money cannot be borrowed from others, and an applicant will need to provide proof of the funds to the Canadian visa office in your home country when you submit your application for immigration. The amount of money you will need to provide proof of is dependent on how many people are included on the application.

As of 9th March 2008, the amount needed is as follows:

Number of family members / Funds required (in CDN$)
1. $10,833
2. $13,486
3. $16,580
4. $20,130
5. $22,831
6. $25,749
7. or more $28,668
