Qualified tradespeople always welcome

If you’re a trade worker with a qualification and experience under your belt, then Australia may just want you. Hanna Lindon discovers the opportunities

Some people still think that to qualify for Australian residency you need to be a professional. In fact, Australia welcomes qualified tradespeople with open arms. Take a look at the Skilled Occupations List, and you'll discover that the people most in demand across Australia are skilled trade workers: electricians, fitters, mechanics, panel beaters, toolmakers and welders, to name but a few. State and territory skills in demand lists are also concentrated on the trades, in particular engineering and electrical trades. Miners are constantly in demand across the country, and the mining industry engages in regular searches for overseas staff.

For many skilled tradespeople, obtaining an offer of employment before emigrating permanently to Australia does not prove to be impossible. The Australian Government's Department of Immigration holds expos across the world in an attempt to attract skilled workers to their country.

You can also search for Australian employers by submitting your CV to the Skills Matching Database.

This helps to match migrants with skilled vacancies in Australia. Anybody using the Skills Matching Database is required to have a valid application for one of the following visa categories:
Skilled – Independent (Migrant) visa (subclass 175);
Skilled – Sponsored (Migrant) visa (subclass 176);
Skilled – Independent (Residence) visa (subclass 885); or
Skilled – Sponsored (Residence) visa (subclass 886)

Alternatively, you can find trades jobs through Regional Recruitment Initiatives. These aim to attract skilled migrants to regional areas. To find out more, contact a Regional Outreach Officer, or visit Australian regional websites.
