Property in Nova Scotia to boom
Property in Nova Scotia to boom

Nova Scotia is fast becoming a popular place with winter tourists, and with a new UK-based Canadian property company promoting Nova Scotia, this destination may follow suit

Second Home Nova Scotia's aim is to highlight "Canada's Atlantic playground", the scenery, natural wonders and recreational and leisure opportunities it offers within six hours' of the UK as well as the province's relatively cheap property prices.

The annual property prices in Nova Scotia remain considerably lower than the national average, reaching only CDN$187,683 in May 2007 compared to the Canadian property price average of CDN$314,258. Until now, the eastern Canadian province has been relatively undiscovered by British holiday-makers. But the Nova Scotia coastline, with miles of relatively empty beaches, sheltered bays and inlets ideal for sailing and kayaking may provide a strong draw for European holidaymakers. Indeed, for winter sports enthusiasts, there are four ski centres offering downhill and snowboarding, while snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and skating are available throughout the province.

The province's villages and towns also offer a host of attractions, from the yachting centre of Chester to the 18th-century Annapolis Royal, to the harbour town of Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The capital city of Nova Scotia, Halifax, also offers a good choice of high quality shopping and outstanding restaurants, as well as a wealth of cultural and historical attractions.

Secondhomenovascotia.com offers information and links about the attractions of the province's various regions, plus practical advice on flights and ferries, car hire and accommodations. The site also includes information on history, culture and the arts, as well as leisure and recreational opportunities. For the Canadian property buyer, the company also offers a vacation homebuying service.

"For years the recreational and holiday attractions of Nova Scotia, as well as the amazing Canadian property bargains, have been a big secret as far as British buyers are concerned," said Kilmeny Fane-Saunders, Second Home Nova Scotia's director and property consultant. "It's a beautiful, unspoiled corner of North America that's easily accessible from the UK, friendly and safe, with a great variety of attractions."

UK-based couple Dave and Kath Young, of Hawnby, North Yorkshire recently bought a holiday-home in Nova Scotia: "We wanted a property where we could have fun with our kids, Isobel, five, and Matthew, three, that wasn't too far from England, but at the same time a world away," says Kath. "Having looked at other places in Canada, we found that nothing beat Nova Scotia for a family holiday, and property is of such good quality and value that we have bought a lakeside cottage. It's fantastic, with swimming and boating on our doorstep and great beaches within 30 minutes. We escape to our holiday retreat as often as possible."

A two-bedroom, two-bathroom property on the oceanfront of South Shore is currently being marketed by Second Home Nova Scotia. The property has its own private dock, two car garages, a second floor loft, ideal for conversion to guest accommodation and is on the market at CDN$350,000

A four-bedroom Canadian property in Halifax with sea views is also on the market, through MLS. On a private lane, the house has three bathrooms, an above-ground pool with a deck and a large garage and driveway and is priced at CDN$229,900.
