The world's most expensive cities
The world's most expensive cities

Mercer Human Resource Consulting has released its annual cost of living survey, and London has moved further up the list, standing as the second most expensive place in the world for expatriates

Glasgow has also climbed up the list a whopping 24 places to 36th place, while Birmingham came in at 41st place, up 22 places from last year. The survey looks at a variety of cost indicators including the price of housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. So the rise of UK cities up the list is not really great news for those of us stuck in Britain.

If you are looking for somewhere that your money may go further, you might want to turn west. The only two American cities in the top 50 were New York, falling five places to 15th place and Los Angles at 42nd place. The fall of American cities can be attributed to a weakened dollar, especially compared to countries in Europe. There were no Canadian cities at all in the top 50.

Down Under, Sydney is the only city that makes the top 50 at 21, which is little change from last years ranking. There are no cities from New Zealand or South Africa that make the top 50. In fact, most of the top 50 was dominated by European cities, suggesting that now is a good a time as any to up sticks and find a new place to live further afield.
